"Flint officials notify residents that their water is in violation of the Safe Drinking Water Act due to excess levels of TTHM—an issue officials reportedly learned of months before. The warning notice states that the harmful chemicals (by-products that can result from the chlorination of water) can imperil “liver, kidneys, or central nervous systems” and may cause an “increased risk of getting cancer” in those who consume large quantities of them over years, but that otherwise the water is safe to drink. High levels of TTHM in violation of the Safe Drinking Water Act persist until September 2015."
