Description:

On May 24, 1845, the Province of Canada declared Queen Victoria's birthday, May 24th as an official public holiday. Even though Queen Victoria had never visited Canada herself, she was a strong supporter of Confederation. She chose Ottawa as the capital of Canada and named British Columbia. In 1845, May 24th was declared Queen Victoria's birthday the public holiday of Victoria Day. In 1897 on Victoria Day, Sir Wilfrid Laurier opened a park called Parc Victoria in Quebec City in honor of the Queen. Today, Victoria Day is celebrated on the Monday preceding May 25th and only celebrated in Canada.
