"De arte praedicandi" by Saint Augustine, Bishop of Hippo, printed by Johann Fust and Peter Schoeffer in 1467 is probably the earliest example of ALPHABETICAL INDEX (more of a "Table of content") in a printed book.Manuscripts indexes appears as early as 1130 as in the case of "Floriger Liber", written by Gregorio da Catino.
Still they will remain rarely used until the XVII century.
