Description:
Enlightened ideas quickly spread from France to England, where free public discussion of social and religious issues was especially far advanced. From England, they spread to the American colonies and provided the intellectual justification for the Revolution of 1776, which was led by prosperous, enterprising men of property and education, acting in their own rational and economic self-interest. The Declaration of Independence (1776) and the United States Constitution (1787) are documents of the Enlightenment; they represent the continuing influence of the Enlightenment in the politics and social philosophy of our own time.
