Two reasons:1) Mass layoffs from cancellation of defense contracts
2) Loss of overtime pay
*also there was a fear of a new Great Depression*
Results:
Stoppages in car, coal, steel, and electrical industries. Disruptions alienated the middle class and outraged conservatives who felt unionization had gone too far.
