The Emancipation Proclamation, issued on September 22, 1862 by Abraham Lincoln, decared that as of January 1, 1863, all slaves in the rebel states (the Confederacy), were free. The Emancipation Proclamation was confirmation that slavery had become part of the reason of the war, especially to the abolitionists.
