The attack on Fort Sumter was the beginning of the Civil War. Fort Sumter was an unfinished fort in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina. After a 34-hour exchange of artillery fire, Robert Anderson, the general occupying Fort Sumter, surrendered the fort to Confederate General P.G.T. Beauregard.
