6 mars 1857 - Dred Scott v Stanford

Description:

Dred Scott was a slave living in Missouri. For 10 years (from 1833-1843) he lived in Illinois and part of the Louisiana Territory- a free state and an area where slavery was forbidden. Scott sued for his freedom under the circumstances that he lived in a free area and thus he was a free man. This was an unsuccessful lawsuit. He then got a new suit in the federal court, but it was ruled that black people were not citizens and thus they could not sue, much less sue for their freedom. This decision deeply angered abolitionists. This event leds to Lincoln being elected. Lincoln, during his presidency, worked towards abolishing slavery.
