west word expatiation led to growing sectionalism and issues over if the new states in the west were going to be slaves states or free states. the Missouri compromise stated that no slavery was allowed north of the 36/30 latitude line. Missouri was admitted as a slave state. Maine was admitted as a free state. this kept the equal balance between free states and slave states.
