Description:
By making this judgment shortly before the American Civil War, the court takes a firm stand in favor of slavery, stating:
on the one hand, that a black man, even a free man, can not be a citizen of the United States;
on the other hand, in the territories of the United States (which at the time were not yet states and are administered by the federal government) the prohibition of slavery is unconstitutional.
