Since the Industrial Revolution, many individuals had experimented with chemicals in an effort to create a material that would replace ivory.

During the 1800s some inventors had managed to form a material known as plastic, meaning "pliable and easily shaped". Originally these first plastics were created from substances found in nature, but eventually, a man named Leo Baekeland invented the very first fully synthetic plastic in 1907.

This new "Bakelite" plastic immediately began to be used for insulators, containers, and jewelry, but as the chemical formula was improved upon over the 20th Century, new forms of plastic would arise eventually leading to it becoming one of the most used materials on the planet.

Unfortunately, the use of plastic in almost all everyday items would eventually lead to mass pollution of the Earth, particularly the oceans where plastic waste and micro-plastics filter down into natural ecosystems killing many animals.
