- On 28 August 1955, fourteen-year-old Emmett Till was murdered by lynching in Mississippi. He was accused of sexually harassing a white woman, Carolyn Bryant.- He was accused of saying "Hi, woman" outside a store (later retracted by the woman in 2008)
- Her white husband and his friend abducted, tortured and shot Emmett before throwing his body off a bridge
- Court decided on 'not guily' verdict
- Photos of Emmett's dead body put in national magazine, raised awareness of brutality and racism in US southern states
