Description:

Mississippi's population grew rapidly after the War of 1812. It soon had enough people to become a state. A constitution was written and Mississippi was admitted. The constitution stated that slavery was a legal institution. Only white male members of the state militia could vote. Members of the Senate had to have 300 acres of land or other property worth 1000 dollars. Members of the House had to have 150 acres of land or property valued at 500 dollars. The governor had to have 600 acres of land or 2000 dollars worth of property. This made the wealthy planters control everything.
