As operation Barbosa commenced, Germany needed a way to finish off the Soviet Union. A heavily favored idea that the Germans used was to cut off Soviet supply lines. Hitler ordered the capture of oil fields, factories, and farmlands in southern Russia and Ukraine. Stalingrad controlled the Volga River and was a major railroad junction.
