30 avr. 1803 - Louisiana Purchase

Description:

First signed April 30th, 1803. The Pinckney Treaty of 1795 had decreased border tension between the U.S. and Spain and the U.S. was allowed access to the Mississippi. However, Napoleon had a plan to use Louisiana as a granary after sending an army to recapture St. Domingue, a sugar colony. James Monroe and Robert Livingston attempted to buy parts of the territory for 10 million while the French army was falling to yellow fever. Napoleon gave up his plans and sold the entirety of the Louisiana territory for 15 million. This addition nearly doubled the size of the U.S.
