1 janv. 1973 - Britain, Ireland and Denmark join

Description:

Following the Suez crisis, the UK had changed it's position on joining the European Communities.
Prices were increasing and sales had been embargoed to certain countries leading to drastic economic problems.

The UK had relations with the EC countries dating back the the early 50s. They tried to join in 1961 but their attemps were quickly vetoed by Charles de Gaulle as he didn't trust the UK.

The UK was heavily dependent on the United States and in de Gaulles eyes would hinder the development of the Union.

Ireland was also very dependent on the UK and applied at the same time. The UK accounted for over 70% of Irelands exports

Denmark as well was heavily dependent on the UK and followed them into the European Communities.

Since then the UK left the European Union on the 31 January 2020

Denmark has long been a country with surrounding controversy inside the Eu. It dates back to them not wanting to join the Eurozone and opting out of EU migration and defence policies.

Since joining the EU, Irelands dependency on the UK has decreased - whilst still the top trade partner - joining the EU has opened Ireland to foreign investment and increased trade with other countries. Ireland is seen as Europes Tax Haven due to it's low corporate tax, an issue the EU is trying to combat
