The Virginia Company made up of 100 members founded the First English settlement in the Americas on the banks of the James River. During the first years famine, disease and conflict with local native Americans, this continued until a new group of settlers arrived in 1610 with supplies. Tobacco was the first profitable export and Jamestown then expanded to the area around the original James Fort and remained the Capital of Virginia until 1699.
