With the intention of creating Bible-literate citizens, the Massachusetts Act of 1647 made it mandatory for each town that had 50+ households to hire a reading & writing teacher.
The significance of this act is that it conceived the still present ideas of public education benefiting our country as a whole and of education having legal, public support.
