27 févr. 1933 - Reichstag Fire (27 Feb 1933)

Description:

Political impact of Hitler's rule
The Reichstag Fire on 27 February 1933 was a significant part of Hitler's rise to power as it removed his greatest opposition, the Communist Party. The Nazis accused Van der Lubbe of being part of a Communist conspiracy and arrested him and several other Communist party leaders under the charge arson and attempting to overthrow the government. Hitler convinced President Hindenburg to invoke Article 48, establish emergency powers and sign the Reichstag Fire Decree. This suspended civil liberties such as the freedom of press and assembling in public, allowing SA to disrupt the election campaigns of other political parties.
