Japan wanted to remove the United States from the Pacific. Japan was the closest US territory to Japan. Japan planned an attack to eliminate the American fleet. Removing the Americans from the Pacific could have prevented the US coming close to mainland Japan, and intervening in the Pacific. However, codebreakers were able to figure out there would be an attack, and quickly warned Admiral Nimitz.
Nimitz set up an ambush for the Japanese attacking fleet. Japan was dealt a larch blow, losing a large portion of their fleet. Nimitz ordered the Aircraft carriers in a certain position. Japanese aircrafts saw the carriers in the open and targeted them. However, they were surprised to find how much anti-aircraft fire was laid upon them.
