1 janv. 1401 - Sacrifice of Isaac, Filippo Brunelleschi, 1401-1402.
Description:
1. During a time that celebrated individualism, competitions were held to recognize the talent of individual artists. A guild-sponsored competition was held for the design bronze doors for the east side of the baptistery in Florence. Seven artists competed and were judged by 34 citizens of Florence. Brunelleschi was second place and lost to Ghiberti. This explains why the artwork is a biblical event.
2. In the late 1390s, the first Duke of Milan began a military campaign to take over the Italian peninsula. Perhaps, the story of Abraham and Isaac was a theme chosen for the competition because the people resonated with the sacrifice of Isaac and Abraham's reward of having a ransom since they had to sacrifice so much to defend their city's freedom. they finally received freedom in 1402 when the Duke of Milan died.
3. Bronze was an expensive medium which is maybe why it was chosen for the doors. The expensive medium shows off the wealth of Florence.
