Date: May 10, 1773This was one of the key measures leading up to the Revolutionary War. The purpose of this act was not increase profits, but to bail out the East India Company, a key player in the British economy. The British government taxed the imports and sales of tea in the colonies and they traded with them for a cheaper amount. They also granted the East India Company with a monopoly on the American tea trade, but the colonists were reluctant, which then led them to dump the tea overboard. This is known as the Boston Tea Party.
