Due to rising political unrest and frustrations with their motherland, The 13 British colonies of New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia wrote an open letter stating their grievances to the British Crown and the decreed that they will no longer be subservient to an oppressive monarch who would not give ear to the opinions and thoughts of his subjects living over 3,000 nautical miles away. The 13 original states were the first 13 British colonies.
