6 nov 1859 - Election of Lincoln in 1860

Description:

The Democratic Party was divided between southern support for slavery and western support for popular sovereignty. When the Democratic Convention endorsed popular sovereignty and Stephan A. Douglas, the lower south states walked out and formed the Southern Democrat Party and their candidate John C. Breckinridge. Some ex-Whigs carried 3 mid-Atlantic states with the Constitutional Union Party with John Bell as their candidate. Lincoln won the electoral vote by a massive margin but only 40% of the popular vote. Soon after, Southerners began the process of secession.
