15 sept. 1850 - Compromise of 1850

Description:

The Compromise of 1850 was an omnibus bill that diffused the slavery crisis for a couple years. Its passage was possible due to a new set of politicians who replaced Clay, Calhoun, and Webster. William H. Seward of NY, Jefferson Davis of Mississippi, Stephan A. Douglas of Illinois, and Taylor's VP Millard Fillmore bargained and negotiated backroom deals rather than values of national interest in order to pass the bills. Texas surrendered its claims to New Mexico while the federal government took over the state's public debt. California was admitted to the union as a free state. The Wilmot Proviso was defeated and slavery within the New Mexico and Utah territories would be decided based on popular sovereignty. Slave trade was banned within Washington DC. A more stringent version of the Fugitive Slave Law was enacted. Although the sectional debate was temporarily quelled, some northern cities refused to enforce the new Fugitive Slave Law leading to violent mobs.
