He is known for publishing the largest chain of newspapers in the US, and for his use of yellow journalism. he used his wealth and privilege to create a media empire. He challenged former idol, Joseph Pulitzer, by charging 1 cent for his papers, and then offering higher wages to Pulitzer's staff. His papers became increasingly political, and he urged war on Spain.
