René Lévesque calls on the Quebec government to save the hostages by meeting the FLQ’s demands. At 5:40 p.m., shortly before the deadline, Quebec justice minister Jérome Choquette announces that if Cross is released, the Liberation cell will be granted safe passage out of Canada, but none of their other demands will be met. Shortly after the deadline passes, two masked members of the Chénier cell kidnap Quebec Minister of Labour and Minister of Immigration Pierre Laporte while he is playing with his nephew on his front lawn in Saint-Lambert (they had found his address in the phone book).
