An ad was published (which contained multiple falsehoods) in the New York Times that promoted sending donations to help Martin Luther King. The city public safety commissioner, Sullivan, saw the criticisms of his subordinates in the ad as personal attacks and sued for libel. The Supreme Court ruled in favor of the New York Times, since there was no libel found.
