The Annexation of Hawaii extended the U.S territory into the Pacific so they could acquire the Island as a port way to China. A year after William Mickingly became president, he signed the new land resolution, which provided the annexation of Hawaii which made it the 50th state in August 1898. Queen Liluokalani was the last royal descendant of Hawaii. She began a coup against the republic, but it wasn't successful. She was arrested for treason, and later under house arrest, she agreed to dissolve the monarchy. She later then tried to restore the monarchy but her attempt failed and Hawaii became the 50th state. Later on, she lived as a private citizen until she died in 1917. She said, "Aloha 'oe, farewell to thee." "One fond embrace before I now depart. Until we meet again." she used this to say good bye to Hawaiian independence.
