W. H. Flower suggested that whalesmight have arisen from some early form of
archaic hoofed mammal, based on such similarities as “the complex stomach, simple
liver, respiratory organs, and especially the
reproductive organs and structures relating
to the development of the young” (Flower,
1883: p. 229).
