james is training with his guard
it's not going too well, everyone's talking about how georges bofort himself is dead
someone asks james is that isn't neslin's uncle and if she isn't the one he's gonna marry
james says yes and no
there's a fast today, everyone's hungry and thirsty, but james tells them that they won't always have time to eat, so it's the perfect day to practise
there's also some commotion bc some merchant's daughter has gone missing, and this is the first instance of someone outside the ward (officially, anyway) disappearing
on his way to high ward, james passes through high street where a fight has broken out
ida (who's just returned from hanbury) sees him and recognises him as a figure of authority, and she runs up to him and asks him to break the fight up
james does so and asks what's going on
one of the men says that two of his daughters have disappeared, but now that a fancy merchant's daughter is gone, all of a sudden people are going out of their way to help
james asks why he was fighting the other man over it, and the man is all 'he's the one who took my girls, i know it!'
james asks why he thinks that, and the man says that the other man has had an eye on them for a while and that maybe the ghost (or whatever his name is) should have killed him instead. he then yells 'ryszard' at him, which has basically become a way of calling someone a pedophile
the other man is enraged, so much so that james has to hold him back, and says that he never touched those girls and that maybe if someone had, they were asking for it and that they would've sold themselves to the ward before long
james is very angry at this and pushes the man to the ground
everyone is a bit stunned, the man gets up, wipes his nose, and says that it's a good thing the girls disappeared so they wouldn't shame their father
the father then is ready to pounce on him, and they both have to be held back and james gets in the middle and holds up his hands and it all 'ok starting now, i'm starting a city watch, consisting of his own men and anyone who wants to volunteer'
when the crowd eventually disperses, a young man comes up to him and james recognises him as jos
jos is all 'u really gonna form a city watch'
james says yes, absolutely
so jos says 'then i'd like to sign up'
we then cut to james standing in front of isa's door, contemplating whether he should knock or not
he decides not to and goes to see charlie instead, passing by maire on the way
