Wilma Rudolph was an Olympic athlete who participated in track and field in the 1960 Olympics in Rome. Rudolph was the first American woman to win 3 gold medals in track and field. When Rudolph won gold in Rome, a celebration was held for her in her hometown of Clarksville, Tennessee. She did not attend the celebration because it was segregated. She continued to protest in Clarksville until those segregation laws were overturned.
