1 janv. 1673 - First Europeans in Iowa (Marquette and Joliet)

Description:

Marquette and Joliet travel along Des Moines River in 1673 as first Europeans in Iowa:

The French were the first Europeans to come to the region that is now Iowa. The very first ones were explorers named Marquette and Joliet, who traveled past Southeast Iowa on the Des Moines River in the 1670’s. The first Native Americans they met were actually the Illini, who were only in Iowa for a decade and a half before returning to their home in Illinois. Later French fur traders did meet the Ioway though, and a very close trading relationship developed between them throughout the 18th century. It is unlikely that the French ever came to the interior of Southeast Iowa as far as Crooked Creek or the Skunk River, but their goods were re-traded to inland communities, or brought back by people who traveled to the major rivers specifically to do business with the fur traders. European technologies were eventually spread to Ioway communities all throughout the interior of eastern Iowa, often replacing stone tools like the ones found at the Sweeting site.
