October 16, 1860: The Henry Repeating Rifle's patent was granted this day. The Henry Repeating Rifle was a 16-shot rifle. Before it existed, the average soldier could shoot 3 rounds per minute. The new rifle was commonly known as “the rifle you could load on Sunday and shoot all week long.” This rifle played a big part in the Civil War because it lead to many more casualties and each side could shoot for a longer amount of time.
