On November 6, 1860 Abraham Lincoln was chosen as the candidate of the Republicans, the Northern Democrats chose Stephen Douglas, and Southern Democrats chose John Breckinridge. With some southerners wanting to try and heal the split with the north and south created the Constitutional Party and had John Bell be the candidate. Even with Stephen Douglas knowing that Lincoln has a high chance of winning still encouraged the south to “try and save the union”. Lincoln won the election with 40% of the popular votes. This election showed how torn the two sides, north and south, really are.
