In the late 1800s expansionist's went to Hawaii in hopes of overthrowing their monarch because of the rich soil that the land possessed and because of their imperialistic mindset. President Cleveland, however, was not in favor of this imperialism and do not allow Republicans to annex Hawaii. However, the war that was occurring in the Philippines gave Congress the ability to annex Hawaii in July 1898 which is 1 the islands became part of the United States and became the 50th state to be part of the union in August of 1959.
