1 mai 1844 - Oregon Territory: “Fifty-four Forty or Fight!” (POL)

Description:

The Oregon territory was a response to the northern fear of Texas coming into the union which would destroy the balance and power between the south and the north seeing as how Texas was in a large and powerful territory strongly in favor of the slavery. The election between Martin Van Buren and James K Polk would also tie into this northern fear because James K Polk was a strong advocate of slavery in Texas and whose main rallying cry was 54 40 or fight which was when he stood on the 54 40 parallel line that separated the territory of Oregon from Alaska.
