also at the time there was a lot of outrage about the assassination of President Garfield in 1881. This pushed Congress to get rid of many government jobs to limit the control of party patronage. The Pendleton Act of 1881 led to the Civil Service Commission and then created a system of how applicants would apply for federal jobs based on their scores on a competitive exam. Initially this only applied to around 10% of federal workers but then ended up expanding to most federal jobs. The politics decided to adapt Les around armies of politics workers and instead to the ridge to fund their campaigns. ultimately this will lead to the political switch of the parties because the Republicans will end up catering towards the rich more.
