Description:

Southern states made Black codes that restricted former slaves from buying or renting land, placed them into semibondage, and prohibited black people from testifying against whites in court. Northern Republicans challenged the results of the election in the South and refused to seat ex confederate state representatives and senators and Alexander Stephens.



Black Codes: These black codes illustrate the laws designed to hold African Americans subordinate to the white race by leaving their current state with economic and social challenges.
