10 févr. 1860 - Election of 1860
Description:
After John Brown's Raid more Americans understood the country was on the edge of disintegration. The presidential election of 1860 would be the test to see if the Union can prevail. The democratic party represented the last practical hope for coalition and compromise. Stephen Douglas was the party's leading candidate and the person most capable of winning the presidency. Although the democrats were fragmented the republicans were the obvious winners but they ensured the win by picking Lincoln as a candidate who was a strong debater who carried the key to the midwestern states of Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio. The election results determined Lincoln to become president as he won every free state of the north which represented a majority of 59% electoral. The new political reality was the populous free states had enough electoral votes to select a president without the need for a single vote from the south.
