6 nov 1860 - The Election of 1860
Description:
Democrats from the South who walked out of the second convention to decide on a nominee for the presidential election after becoming divided on the election then blockage of Stephen Douglas, decided to hold their own convention where they elected VP John C Breckinridge to be their candidate, and at this convention did the delegates advocate for the expansion of slavery and Cuba’s annexation. The Republicans advocated for not expanding slavery in the territories, tariffs that protect industry, internal improvements (encouraged western settlement), and free land for “homesteaders”. The Republicans nominated Abraham Lincoln who they knew was moderate enough to win a majority vote. There were states that threatened secession from the Union if Lincoln won the election. The Constitutional Union Party was created by Know-Nothings, Former Whigs, and moderate Democrats that did not want Lincoln to win. Ultimately, Lincoln did win the Election of 1860 with 59% of the electoral college votes.
