30 mai 1854 - Kansas- Nebraska Act
Description:
The Kansas- Nebraska Act was a bill proposed by Senator Stephen S. Douglas that divided Nebraska into two parts: Nebraska Territory and Kentucky Territory; additionally, the bill permitted popular sovereignty to the settlers of these territories in regards to whether or not they would allow slavery. The bill would allow slave owners in the South to expand slavery even though they were previously not allowed to due to the Missouri Compromise. Douglas proposed this bill because he needed southern approval for a plan he devised that permitted the building of a transcontinental railroad through the central US. The North was unhappy with this bill and condemned its proposal. The bill was passed by Congress and signed into law by President Pierce in 1854.
