Democrats gave nicknames to republicans. Democratic opponents gave the nickname “scalawags” to Southern Republicans. They called Northern newcomers “carpetbaggers.” Former Whigs were most likely Southern white people who supported to Republicans who were invested in peace between sections and economic development for the states. Some northerners went south because they were either investors, ministers, or teachers with humanitarian goals.
