1 janv. 1850 - fugitive Slave Law
Description:
Due to the Fugitive Slave Law, the southerners accepted California as a Free State. The enforcement of the new law in the North was resisted by antislavery Northerners and it made a divide between the North and the South. The law tracked down runaway slaves who escaped North and bring them back to their owners. It authorized U.S commissioners to arrest fugitive slaves. African Americans who claimed to be free were denied the right of trial by jury. Anyone who protected them would have penalties.
