As urban centers were gaining more attention for their harsh living and working conditions, the churches of America were beginning to fight against the laws and corrupt systems that allowed for countless people to suffer in the urban atmosphere. Walter Rauschenbusch, leader of the Social Gospel movement, emphasized the importance of applying Christian values and faith to social problems. His Social Gospel would play a pivotal role in the Progressive reform movement and would invoke many middle-class protestants to attack the systematic corruption that caused problems in urban centers.
