24 févr. 1868 - Impeachment of Andrew Johnson

Description:

Congress passed an act which did not allow the president to remove a federal or military commander without the approval of the Senate. This was to protect the Radical Republicans in Johnson’s Cabinet. Johnson believed this law to be unconstitutional and dismissed Edward Stanton without approval. The House impeached Johnson and charged him with 11 high crimes and misdemeanors. Johnson was the first President to be impeached and Johnson's impeachment vote was one vote short of the two thirds that was needed to remove him from office. 7 moderate Republicans voted against the impeachment since they thought it was unnecessary to impeach him for political reasons.
