18 juin 1812 - War Hawks

Description:

This group that labeled themselves “War Hawks” consisted mainly of young
politicians coming from the West and South. This growing party of Jeffersonian Republicans, headed by new House Speaker Henry Clay, pushed for a military conflict to address American concerns. Their territorial ambitions located in the Northwest and Florida inspired them to initiate a war with Great Britain. During the Napoleonic Wars, the War Hawks despised American financial injuries and national
embarrassment intensely. Their objectives were primarily to restrict British influence among Native Americans and achieve more property for settlement. The war hawk members of Congress, led by Henry Clay and John C. Calhoun proposed that war with Britain was the only solution to protect American
honor, acquire Canadian territory, and suppress American Indian resistance on the border. Usually, the group will give speeches encouraging Americans to take a stand against Great Britain. A contributing factor of the War of 1812 was the patriotism and anti-British sentiment stirred up by the War Hawks.
