5 mai 1803 - Louisiana Purchase

Description:

The territory of Louisiana
encompassed a considerable amount of unexplored western land from which the rivers of Mississippi and Missouri flowed. In 1803, the transfer of the territory of Louisiana by the United States from France became the Louisiana Purchase. The acquisition increased the size of the United States and offered a
strong catalyst for expansion to the west. The agreement provided the United States the full power to acquire the territory from its native peoples, whether it be by negotiation or by invasion. Louisiana and New Orleans were initially under Spanish control, but then, in 1800, Napoleon and his militia compelled
Spain to return the territory of Louisiana to its original owner, France. Napoleon planned to return the French empire to the New World, but was discouraged due to: 1) the need to focus French resources on the war against England and 2) a revolt on the island of Santo Domingo led by Toussaint l'Ouverture
against French rule.
