1 janv. 1924 - Immigration Act of 1924

Description:

This Act which was also known as the Johnson Reed Act, was a response to the immigration surge right before WWI. This was during a nativist campaign against ethnic minorities and the drive t slow down immigration. As a result, this Act used a national origins quota formula to admit only 2% of each nationality that was present in the U.S. in 1890. This quota system severely restricted immigration from southern and eastern Europe, but allowed significant immigration from Northern and Western Europe. Also, Asians were specifically excluded from immigration. This was just the first attempt to restrict immigration and was motivated by racist, nativist intentions.
