-1st black student to be enrolled at "Ole Miss"
-after rioting and previously being denied entry by Mississippi Governor Barnett ("no school will be integrated in Mississippi while I am your governor")
-faced harassment + isolation from white students
-JFK reluctant to take direct action (first tried secret talks with Governor Barnett) but eventually sent in troops after rioting/violence to allow Meredith to enroll
